Why nonprofits need a hotline

Why does a nonprofit need an ethics hotline?

Boards, funders and small teams all benefit from a safe, independent way to raise a concern.

Form 990 asks about it

Form 990, Part VI asks whether your organization has a written whistleblower policy. A hotline is how that policy works in practice: a safe place for reports to go. No policy yet? Start with our free template.

An independent channel for the board

Reports can reach your board chair or audit committee directly, including concerns about the executive director.

A clear answer for funders and auditors

Funders, auditors and insurers may ask what reporting channel you have. A hotline gives you a simple answer.

Donor trust and reputation

Donors give to organizations they trust. Hearing about a problem early helps you fix it before it damages that trust.

Small teams and volunteers

People won’t report to the person they work beside every day. An outside channel lets staff and volunteers speak up anonymously.

What your board and admins get

Tools to handle every report responsibly

Your admins and investigators work every report in our online case management system.

New-report email alerts. Every admin gets an email when a report comes in.
Case management included. Notes, documents, priority and status for every case, at no extra cost.
Investigator roles. Investigators see only the cases assigned to them, so you can keep a case away from anyone it involves.
Follow-up with anonymous reporters. Post questions and status replies; reporters read them and answer with their Report Key.
Reports kept for you. Reports stay in your account for as long as you’re a customer. If you cancel, we keep them until you ask us to delete them.

Nonprofit FAQ

Questions nonprofits ask

Who should receive hotline reports at a nonprofit?

Usually the board chair or audit committee chair, plus one staff member, set up as admins. Avoid sending reports only to the executive director, since a concern may involve them. Every admin gets an email when a new report comes in, and investigators see only the cases assigned to them.

Can volunteers and donors use the hotline?

Yes. Anyone with your Company ID can report by web, phone or text, including volunteers, donors, vendors and grant recipients. They don’t need an account, and they can check the status of their report with their Report Key.
